This guide sets out the minimum knowledge, practical skills and experience you need to work in a competent person scheme in schedule 3 of the building regulations.

Competent person schemes allow registered businesses and people to self-certify that certain building work complies with the Building Regulations, instead of seeking building control approval before work starts.

This document sets out the minimum knowledge, practical skills and experience expected of:

  • scheme operators and their assessors

  • businesses and individuals applying to join a competent person scheme

  • registered businesses and individuals who self-certify work
